Rock Chalk

My husband went to the University of Kansas… even though he has lived in Missouri his whole life.  He loves Kansas basketball and even though I wouldn’t classify him as a fanatic, if we have other plans he doesn’t complain about missing a game, I try to support his passion… even though my Missouri University friends consider this to be a form of child abuse.  In honor of the KU/KState game tonight we tried to teach Robert how to “wave the wheat”.  If someday he finds himself applying to KU, this video is going in his application.

In other news, I think we’re going to try to go to church tomorrow… it’s only been two years.  Actually the last time we were there was Robert’s baby dedication… my how time flies.  I don’t want to put him in the nursery because when life is “normal” I don’t want him in someone else’s care another hour in the week… so, we’ll see how it goes… step one… get up early.  Which means I probably better go to sleep!

Robert Right Now

For Robert there are two things that are fascinating him right now.  Ink pens… not crayons, not ColorWonder markers… he wants “PENS!!!”  He’s doing pretty good about only writing on paper, but we have to be sure any important papers aren’t within his reach.  He critiqued a stack of my resumes the other day.  He loves notebooks and takes copious notes.

When he’s not writing he is fixing things.  Several times a day I will hear “I fix it” and see that he either has a toy tool from his tool chest or an errant screwdriver that’s been left out and he is repairing various things he feels warrant fixing.

Granny Time!

RC & Granny 1

RC & Granny 2

Today first thing in the morning we headed out to spend some time with my Mom.  Robert is head over heels in love with his Granny.  She can tell him “no” about something and even though he’s not happy about it, he doesn’t cross her…. smart kid  🙂

I didn’t take any toys or videos with us.  Mom gave him crayons and paper when we got there and he spent his day diddling around the house either coloring or playing in my nephews room with his stuffed animals and balls.  Mom and Robert both had such a good time together.  I actually took about an hour and a half nap on the couch… it’s a comfort thing napping on my parent’s couch.

At 4:30 I told Robert we needed to think about heading home…. he did not want to leave.  Even when I told him Daddy would be waiting for us.  When my Mom put his coat on him he seemed resigned to the fact we were leaving… when we got in the Jeep I figured out why… he thought she was coming with us!  Poor little guy.  So, we’ll have to go back out again one day, maybe next week.

As we were leaving it dawned on me I hadn’t taken any pictures of the two of them again, so I snapped these two real quick.  I love how she looks at him… he is so special to her.

Ten On Tuesday

image

1.  Older rescued kittens are more work than a newly weaned kitten.  We did finally find Mel, he had found the cat room in the basement and was happy there so I moved Jack down there too.  I’ve blocked the cat door for now to give them a space of their own.  For the most part they hide when I got down to visit but I can usually catch one of them and hold him until he purrs.  I hope they realize soon that they are safe and nothing bad is going to happen to them here.

2.  The show “Teen Mom” on MTV is pissing me off… what are these girls thinking!  I just want to smack that Farrah girl when she whines about how well she takes care of her daughter and then in the next breath tells her parents she can stay out as late as she wants… grrr!!!  That’s a baby you have… not a hamster!

3.  More interviews this week.  A couple of job applications that I’m really excited that something may come out of them… because they are things I think I’d really like and excel at.  Another company that I applied for a job with has yet another job posted and this time are using a recruiter… third time’s a charm???  Maybe they’ll get the message, I really want to work for you.  Crafting the perfect cover letter right now.

4.  I’m loving getting to spend more time with my Mom.  Tomorrow Robert and I are heading out there for the day after Jim leaves for the office.  No plans, just going to hang out and let her enjoy her time with Robert.

5.  96 pages completed on my Winkflash book and they extended the sale for a week.  I know what two of the remaining four pages are going to be and then I’ll look back through the layouts and decide on the other two.  I thought since they extended the sale I might go ahead and try to get 2009 done too but then decided against that.  I will start on the layouts knowing the sale will come around again.

6.  Looking at Jim’s travel schedule and wanting to cry!  He’s gone two weeks in February… one of them is a Sunday through Saturday.  So far it’s only one week in March but THREE weeks in April… Good Lord I hope I’m back to work by then.  But trips mean extra money and more income is always welcome.

7.  Is there anything more fun on this Earth than a two year old boy???  Seriously he’s an explosion of language and skills right now.  He is busy from the minute he gets up until he crashes.  I’ve found if he hasn’t napped by 2pm don’t let him because he’ll be up all night.  We’re getting a bit better about him getting to sleep at a decent time… but basically it means the whole house shuts down for thirty minutes while he’s going to sleep or he is up checking things out.  Sunday he slept through the second football game… BAD IDEA!!!  Guess who got to stay up until 3am.  We’re not doing that again… makes for a grumpy Mommy the next day.

8.  I love what a good Daddy Jim is.  His father was no role model and he’s really embraced truly having a relationship with Robert.  I love watching them together.  Jim is in charge of bath time most nights… which is when I take an opportunity to clean the living room, vacuum, etc.  Some nights I have to stop and just listen to how much fun they are having.

9.  I was wondering why it was so cold in here and then I remembered that Jim set the smoke detector off while making dinner tonight.  What’s really embarrassing for him is our smoke detector is hard wired into the alarm system so of course the alarm company called and the woman asked him if he was cooking dinner… I guess she said it sort of like it was because he’s a man.  Jim does all the cooking here… he just had two pans of stuff going and it smoke up pretty quick… and he never turns on the exhaust fan.

10.  My niece was supposed to spend the day with us Saturday.  The plan was her mother would drop her off here at 11am.  Of course I got a text from her at 9:30am that Mommy went in to work and she didn’t have a ride over here.  So we went and picked her up.  We dropped Jim off at the cigar store because they were having a big event and then went and met my Mom and Sherry for lunch (a surprise to my niece who showed up wearing pajama pants).  It was a nice time.  She was supposed to be over here until 10 pm but her Mom called and had invited people over for dinner so she was picking her up at 5:30pm.  I’m glad we had only really planned to hang out and hadn’t made big plans since you can never really plan anything.

Good Grief!

We’ve lost one of the kittens… in the house.  I kid you not.  When I went to bed last night they were both in the living room… relaxing, doing just fine.  Got up this morning and we could only find Jack.  Mel was nowhere to be found.  We’ve turned the house upside down and still no sign of the little booger.  I guess he will come out of hiding when he gets hungry but it’s still weird.

Harley met Jack today and was excited.  Jack was NOT impressed.  He arched his poor little back as high as he could, hissed an awfully ferocious hiss and his tail puffed out four times the normal size.  Harley did pretty good and only barked after he swiped at her.  We are going to have to ease them into this so it’s a lot of shuffling animals between rooms right now.  Luckily Jack really doesn’t mind being alone in a bedroom for long stretches.

Two Is Better Than One

I finally decided that it’s time to have a cat in the house again.  At first I thought we would wait longer but then I visited some friends who have two kittens and I held them… and that sealed the deal… we need a cat again!  So today we stopped on our way home from lunch at Animals In Need Thrift Store to see the cats… just see them.  Well, they had this pair of brothers who are 7-8 months old and were found a few days ago abandoned in an apartment.  They are in good health, have had their shots, are neutered and micro-chipped.  They’re a bit underweight but otherwise in seemingly good health.  Robert loved them and they were very mellow as he was sticking his head in their cage and in general wallering them.  As I was mulling it over the adoption woman came over and said it would be $40 for both of them… instead of $50 each.  They REALLY wanted us to take them. (as my aunt said, they saw you coming!)  So, we did.  Meet Mel & Jack.   They are still getting used to things here and are a bit on the shy side.  They really like laying in the cat tower together but will let you hold them.  They tolerate Robert.  We haven’t introduced them to Harley yet… going to let them get their bearings.  We don’t know how long they were alone for or if they’ve been around children or dogs.  But they have a home now and I’m sure in a few days they’ll be right in the middle of all the melee that is our life.  Robert is beside himself!

New Favorite

I finally downloaded the camera today.  Robert had hidden my card reader, found it in the couch cushions… his new favorite place to hide stuff.  I pulled my slippers and the card reader out of the corner of the sectional.  Gotta remember to check that when I’m missing something.

Anyway… this picture was on it and it is so him right now…

RC Please Mommy

I can just hear him saying “Cheez (please) Mama!”, and pretty much knowing those big brown eyes are going to get it for him.

Still no job.  Got a very nice turn down on one of them.  I had really wanted it to come through but am confident that there is something better out there.  There were a few really interesting positions listed this week that I think hold some promise.  I’m not panicking yet but I really wish that the economy was better.  We did get news that Jim’s company is reinstating the last 5% of the 15% salary cut they made last year so next month he will be back up to his full salary.  That’s good for us financially but it also means their sales are up and they are hitting projections.

Wednesday Jim was in Houston so we went to our friend’s the Petersen’s for dinner.  Amy made Grandma Petersen’s chicken casserole and it was very tasty.  Robert had a good time playing with their kittens… we are so going to have to find a new kitten soon.  I held the little boy kitten forever and he was purring and it made me miss Cosmo and miss having a kitty in the house.

Today we met my Mom at Costco for some shopping and lunch.  It wound up being Costco simply because that’s where she needed to go.  Robert was so excited that we were going to go see Granny.  He was adorable and had to be right by her side when he wasn’t in the cart.  On our way out she had to stop and take a cookie out of one of the packages she bought to give him for the car ride home.

When I got home this afternoon I got a hold of my niece to see if we could hang out some this weekend.  She is coming over here tomorrow around 11 and my nephew will pick her up around 10 after his meeting.  I was talking to my Mom and found out that she was going to Overland Park tomorrow with Sherry Welch so we are all going to try to meet up for lunch.  Outlaw Cigar has a new store open in Overland Park so we’re going to drop Jim off there for one of their big events and then pick him up after lunch and he, Erika, Robert and I will hang out together.  I also found out that Erika and Donald are planning to go out and visit with my Mom on Sunday.  I know she will like that.  Donald is more willing to come around now that he is sober.  I’ve had a few really good conversations with him this week and he is doing good, which does my heart good.

I’ve now got 64 of the possible 100 pages of Robert’s photo book done.  Deadline to order is next Wednesday so I’m right on track.  I’m excited to see the finished product so I know if I want to continue ordering through Winkflash.  I also started missing just having regular photo albums that we can pull out, look at the pictures and remember the stories without the journaling so I am going to start ordering pictures monthly to put in my new Snoopy album.
