Christmas Happenings

I’m sure there will be more than one post about Christmas… I have so much to share but since it’s been so long since I posted everything will be kinda jumbled together.  I’ll try to make it make a little sense.

We baked a lot of cookies this year.  Cousin Erika came and helped us one day.  Robert absolutely adores his cousin… and she adores him too… she is so good with him!

We also went to Skate with Santa with Erika.  Turns out none of us are really good ice skaters…. but we had fun anyway.  I was just happy that I made it off the ice with no falls and no injuries!

Bob & Sherry Welch got Robert this cool gorilla for Christmas.  He spent the first day being scared to death of it.  Today he will actually watch it and laugh but he won’t touch it yet.  I think it’s a riot!

Christmas Is Over

OK… so Christmas is over.  For me it was sort of like the Christmas that didn’t really come.  The weather wreaked havoc on our plans and it was the 28th before I got to see my Mom… four days later than I had planned.  The first time in my life I didn’t spend Christmas Eve with her.  She hosted a big brunch yesterday (that was supposed to be Sunday) and we all had a really good time.

So, how did I do with the 25 things… let’s see…

Well it’s December 15th so I thought maybe I’d check in with our list of 25 things to do for Christmas.

1.  Go to the Clydesdale Barn

2.  Take a carriage ride

3.  Visit the Fairy Princess

4.  Visit Santa

5.  Play at Crown Center’s Toyland

6.  Go to see the Plaza Lights

7.  Bake and decorate cookies

8.  Bake holiday treats for presents

9.  Take a family portrait

10.  Send out Christmas cards

11.  Do a Christmas craft

12.  Read ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas

13.  Watch A Charlie Brown Christmas

14.  Decorate the house

15.  Visit Santa Paws (Santa for dogs)

16.  Play in the snow (hopefully there will be some snow)

17.  Shop for Salvation Army Angels

18.  Make a Gingerbread House

19.  Drive around drinking hot chocolate and looking at Christmas lights

20.  Go to Christmas Eve service

21.  Dance to Christmas Music in our pajamas and snuggle by the fire

22.  Watch Rudolph

23.  Put out milk and cookies for Santa

24.  Keep a Holiday Journal

25.  Go to a holiday lighting ceremony

22 of 25… not too bad.  Christmas Eve service was skipped on account of the weather.  We haven’t played in the snow yet because it’s just been too darn cold.  The day we were supposed to do Santa Paws Jim had to go to a dinner and I couldn’t take the dog and Robert.  Technically when we drove around looking at lights we didn’t have hot chocolate because we found that Robert didn’t like it.

Today I got a new laptop… sort of a late Christmas present.  It’s got a ton of memory and speed so I’m getting it all set up.  Finally be able to really play with my pictures in one place.  I’m so excited.  Also revamping the home network so hopefully all the computers talk to each other again.  I hope to be back later tonight with pictures from Christmas.

Goodbye Cosmo

DSC03008

Well, it wasn’t a fur ball or an upset tummy.  It was a blockage in his bladder.  Today Cosmo was just so lethargic and at noon I noticed he was twitching his tail… that means he was in discomfort.  So I called the vet… they said get him there NOW.  I called Jim to come home and watch Robert and packed Cosmo up.  The vet confirmed there was a block… but he also heard a heart arrhythmia, which meant probable kidney damage.  The could do an expensive procedure to drain him but it was likely there was too much kidney damage for him to live long.  So, I made the heart wrenching decision to let him go.  He was too good of a friend to put through a bunch of procedures so he could just be miserable a few more days and I wouldn’t have to let him go.  I texted Jim.. and then cuddled Cosmo one last time and thanked him for being the best cat ever.  He was so much more than just a cat.  When my brother was killed Cosmo is the one who got me through it.  Every morning he would wake me up and lay on my chest to be petted and just let me talk or cry… he didn’t care as long as I was petting him.  Funny how such a little creature changes our lives so completely.

Jim buried him on the north side of the house under his favorite window and promised to plant flowers this spring… then had to go back to work.

Robert asked about Cosmo when I got home and seemed satisfied with the explanation he’s not coming back.  He cried for a minute, then asked for me to turn on Jack’s Big Music Show.

Not too bad.. we’ve completed 15 things… right on track!  Hopefully this Friday we can go see Santa.  Jim is off Friday and perhaps the temperatures will be something higher than 12!!!  I’m sick of cold.  If we’re going to have cold we might as well have snow so it’s pretty.

I had a really good interview this morning.  I’ll find out by Monday if I make it to the next round of interviews.. which won’t happen until after the first of the year.  I also had an unexpected phone interview yesterday… once again they won’t be moving on to round two until after the first of the year.  I know it’s only a few weeks but I’m ready to have something decided!

Hopefully later on tonight I will be able to post some pictures from our December.  I’ve been participating in a December photo a day challenge on Facebook but those pictures are on the downstairs computer… and that part of our little home network is not communicating with the other computers right now…. love technology with personality disorders.

My poor Mr. Cosmo is sick right now.  I got home from my interview and he was on the bed in the guest room.  I think it’s just an upset tummy or fur ball but I’m keeping an eye on him.  He would really like me to curl up with him for a while (and I would like to) but I can’t until Jim gets home.  Robert wants to pet him if I’m holding him and he does not feel up to that right now.

‘Tis the Season

We go tomorrow morning for our portraits and I can’t wait.  I got the cutest sweater vest for Robert yesterday at Macy’s.  It was on sale for $12!  What a steal.

Between Internet shopping and entertaining Robert I haven’t gotten the cameras downloaded in a few days.  I hope to get to that this afternoon if he takes a nap.  He keeps acting like he is going to and then gets up.  This morning I was up first and in the living room.  He woke up and went to the top of the steps to see where I was.  He yelled to me, “Mama hug?”  I said, “Yes, Mama needs a hug!”  He came running over and gave me the biggest hug… now that’s a great way to start the day.

He is at such a fun age.  Some of his favorite phrases right now are “I’m coming!”, “Hug?” or “HUG!” (it can be a question or a declarative statement.)  “Yes???” usually in response to you calling his name.  “Help!” used often when he lays down on the couch and wants to be covered up.  He is still in love with the vacuum.  I’ve caught him taking the outlet covers off a few times and plugging it in.  He knows he’s not supposed to do that because I came out of the kitchen the other day and he was hurriedly unplugging it and looking at me like, “You didn’t see that”.  Oh yes, and “POOF!” which is said while grabbing his tushy and means it is time for a diaper change.  The first time he did it it took me about five minutes to quit laughing so I could change him.  Oh yes, and “Catch!” which he yells usually when the object he has thrown to you hits you.  We’re working on timing there.

Tomorrow is going to be a busy day.  It starts at the portrait studio at 8:40am… early in the day is better for Robert but wreaks havoc on me!  Then I have a second interview at 2:30.  Afterwards I need to run by my Aunt’s house and pick up her theater ticket for Sunday.  She is not going to be able to make it so she gave her ticket to me… my Mom has the other ticket so that will be a nice outing with my Mom.  Tomorrow night is Santa Paws… Santa for your dog.  It’s hosted by a local shelter that we support and I hope we can make it.  Harley will love it, as will Robert.  A lot depends on how cold it is.  I hate taking Robert out in the bitter cold… we will just have to see.  We got about four inches of show the other night.  I was happy that I had no where I had to go yesterday morning.  I did venture out last night to get my hair cut… I was beginning to resemble an Old English Sheepdog.

Saturday a friend is coming over, she wants to do a photo gift book for her new boyfriend.  I told her I have EVERYTHING you could ever imagine, including a spiral binding machine… come here and we’ll make a day of it.  I’m so excited.  I also am putting together a book for Jim from Robert… “Reasons my Dad is the Best Dad Ever”.

Robert figured out how to open my 100+ year old family heirloom curved front china cabinet yesterday.  He got out the sugar bowl.. needless to say my dining room looked like we had thrown an outrageous cocaine party.  He got out the china sugar bowl and a crystal candlestick.. and managed not to break anything.  I’ve now taken the key out… much to his dismay.

Today I have a couple of jobs to apply for, some cleaning to do and laundry… although a nap is sounding like a much better idea.

So, what Christmas gifts have I purchased so far you ask… well, let me share.

For my dear husband… the avid cook.

A Le Creuset 6 quart stock pot…. available for $40 on Amazon.com… with free two day shipping.

Stock Pot

And a couple of new cook books… he loves cook books and lost a lot of his collection when his mother died… so I’m helping build it back up.

Emeril

Top Chef

For my Mom… Ms. Hard to Buy For.  She has one of these coffee pots but it’s leaking… and it’s all she wants for Christmas… which she announced before I lost my job.  They’re usually over $100…. they grind the beans and brew the coffee.  I found it on sale at Bed, Bath & Beyond for about 50% off and had a coupon for an extra 20% off… she’s going to be really surprised.

Cuisinart Grind and Brew

For my niece and nephew.  I’ve always been their main source of Christmas.  My Mom always does money for them.  That was their Dad’s go to gift too.  Their Mom is well… she’s just the way she is and I’ll leave it at that.  Granted they are 17 & 18 now and it’s not as big of a deal as when they were little and I was the one who always made sure that Santa did not miss their house.  I warned both of them that Christmas was going to be lean this year and they were both very understanding, “We don’t need anything.” But they do need.  One thing I am doing is making photo books of their Dad for them.  Something they can pull out and look at.  I’m pissed that the last few years of his life he was a real curmudgeon about having his picture taken… that’s all we have now and I wish we had more.  I had an idea to limit them to four gifts this year using the formula:  Something they want, something they need, something to wear and something to read.  As it turns out, that’s exactly what I’m doing for them.

For Donald:

Want — Cash

Need — A new wallet

cowboys wallet

Something to wear — Cowboys t-shirts

Cowboys TShirt

Something to read

Game Changers

Can you tell he’s a Cowboys fan???  It was something he and his Daddy shared.

For Erika

Want – cash

Need — I’m working on this.. I think it will be Bath & Body Works stuff… but that could change

Wear — a Life is Good shirt… she needs that message and loves horses

Life Is Good shirt

Read

Chosen by a Horse

She’s a horse lover.

For all the girls in the family, nieces, Mom, aunts (and a pair for me!) these awesome shea butter slipper socks…only $5 at Bath & Body Works… I even picked up a few pairs for friends.  I’m wearing mine right now!

Slipper Socks

We haven’t really shopped for Jim’s sister and her family yet.  We go there for New Year’s so a lot of times I’ll catch the after Christmas sales.  I have gotten a book for each of the kids (I like to encourage reading).  It’s not easy picking books for four really different kids… Aaron is 17, Sarah is 14, Anna is 11 and Ella is 5.  I think for Debbie (SIL) I’m going to put together a nice basket with relaxing stuff (aromatherapy stuff from BBW and some coffee, a mug, etc.) something to encourage her to take time for her.  I have no clue what to do for Doyle (BIL)… but it will come to me.  I think they might be getting a Wii for Christmas.  If they do we might do a family gift of some Wii games or a balance board or dance mat… something like that.  It is helpful that the girls now text me.  They were snowed in the past couple of days and both of them were texting me.

Christmas Crafts

I wanted to do a Christmas craft project with Robert but wasn’t sure what he would enjoy that wouldn’t be too incredibly messy.  I finally settled on these foam wreath picture holder ornaments.  He had a great time putting on the decorations and was not real happy when we were done.

Tonight I get to meet Nancy and Amy and go see Blind Side.  I really want to see it and Amy called last night to invite me along… yeah, some adult time!!!

Tomorrow it’s another interview and then reporting to the unemployment office for my once every 28 days show up in person visit.  Friday and Saturday I’ll be out at my Mom’s helping her with her open house.  That should be a lot of fun… I just hope Robert behaves.

What A Day

I had a phone interview today… and Robert loves to talk on the phone so I knew I needed a good distraction for him.  I went to the big guns… markers… or cul-lee as Robert calls them.  The minute I grabbed the box off the refrigerator he lost his little mind running around yelling “Cul-lee!!!” at the top of his lungs.  I set him up in his bedroom with his big pad of paper and Jack video.  I told him… “only color on the paper”.  I left the room and when I checked on him the first time this is what I found.

RC Marker 1

RC Marker 2

Isn’t he adorable.  Coloring so nicely on the paper.

When I checked on him again I found this…

RC Marker 3

In his defense… he is actually on the paper while he is coloring.   Leave it to me to have the world’s most literal two year old.  He was quite proud of himself.

RC Marker 4

It looked like he was trying out for a part in Wicked… or an Incredible Hulk remix.  Later in the day he added red and blue to the mix.  The good thing is 95% of it came off in the bath, and I aced my interview.  The woman said I’d be getting a call back for the live interviews next week.  All is well that ends well.
